The Dandy Warhols played to a packed out Enmore Theatre tonight. I was kicked out of the venue after the 3 songs, but told I could come back in if I cloaked my camera gear (which there was no way I was going to do). So I ended up driving home in a little over an hour and in the last hour since getting home, have managed to download the the shots onto my very ill and slow computer, sort through the 120 or so photos, gently massage the best ones in photoshop, upload to flickr and finally make a blog post, possibly resulting in my most efficient performance on a gig night EVER!

Lighting was pretty spectacular with a nifty LED array at the back, but what we saw overall was mostly backlit and not much from the front, meaning lots of silhouettes and dimly lit faces.

I shot in RAW tonight for the first time in ages. I haven’t been able to find a workflow I liked for RAW and all my shots ended up yellow/green tinged. I think I’ve managed to get over this hurdle with a bit of education on the internet and the end result is not too bad!

It was great to hear some of the tracks that I’d loved when I was a bit younger back in the 90s. :)
Oh yeah, if you get to this point, can you be kind enough as to tell me where you’re all coming from? I’m kinda curious because my web traffic has doubled since around the 25th of this month, and I have no idea why, nor can I see anything in my web stats… People on RSS feeds and regulars need not apply. :)
I heard that the lights here in Perth were dark and backlit until after the 3 songs… which doesn’t surprise me for The Dandy Warhols!
What are you using for stats… WordPress stats and/or Google Analytics?
Maybe they’re all direct links somehow?
i’m using awstats which is on my webhost. i’ve got webalizer available as well, but i’m not using it at the moment.
i’ve never used google analytics, i’ll check it out. generally google does stuff pretty well. :)
Yeah, it’s pretty good. It’s got great trending tools and records lots of info. Get in on it before Google misses out on finding out why you’ve got more traffic!
What’s this internet education you speak of? The yellow/green thing is the main thing I despise about RAW
You managed to pull some nicely filled out shots if it was mostly a backlit LED show, and your silhouettes look great too. Awesome work.
i’m surfing from florida. you’ve been a regular feed since i discovered your music-related work. i enjoy concert photography, and definitely enjoy your style.
jacinta, i really don’t know what the secret is, but i’ll share what i do.
bump the contrast up using a gentle s-curve in the curves. then, using colour balance, do one thing to the cyan/red, and then do the exact opposite to the yellow/blue. if the shot is too cold (blue), you’ll end up with the cyan/red in the positives and yellow/blue in the negatives, and vice versa for a warm (yellow) shot. it’s a poor man’s method of adjusting white balance in photoshop. it’s very subtle, you should never have to go much above 10-15 for either the cyan/red or yellow/blue. i just wrote a little photoshop action that does the curves adjustment layer and the colour balance once i’ve imported the raw in (using the as-shot white balance and default other settings). obviously, slight tweaking of the contrast and colour balance is required depending on the shot and sometimes, you’ll have to adjust one of the colour balance settings without adjusting the other as much.. whatever is needed though!
will, i struggle a bit mate, but i definitely think RAW helped me! i might just be a convert. ;)
angel, thanks! i hope florida keeps you warm this winter!
hi there,
Your photos look great. I don’t even bother taking photos at gigs as they never turn out but yours are beautiful!
The Enmore show was amazing, i’m still re-living it :)
I was curious about who did the Dandy’s lighting and found your page through google. I live in the Blue Mountains.
hey!
got here through a link on flickr!
wonderful shots,
love the colour.
