Yashica Mat-12 (?)

So I finally scratched that medium format itch I’ve been having with the purchase of this little baby.

I don’t know what model it actually is (i’ve narrowed it down to one that only uses 120 film), but the optics are really clean and everything seems to work ok so I can live with that. I’m pretty sure there’s meant to be a light meter module attached on top (where the actual model name badge goes) but it’s not there. Apparently the metering is quite bad though, and you’re better off with an external light meter.

If you can identify this camera for me, I’ll give you a prize.*

So this is going to be a REALLY steep learning curve. I’ve never used film before (not even 35mm) so it will indeed be a challenge. Wish me luck!

Strobist: 430EX @ 1/32 power above with purple gel, 580EX @ 1/4 into DIY crap ring flash mounted on axis

* Prize may or may not be real

    Hey! Its just like mine!

All I’ve ever managed to find out about mine is its a ‘studio’ camera from the 50′s. Its one step up from a box brownie, but just before they invented flip technology (so the image in the viewfinder is the right way up).

120 roll film is beautiful. i’ll show you some of my shots if you’re interested. i shot with it on black and white before having it cleaned, and i’d have to say i like them better than the images i took post-cleaning!!

anyway, its true about the lightmeter. it has nowhere near the same level of accuracy as your new fangled gear does, but it should do the job. can you see a lever in the viewfinder?

i wish you lots of happy photos!

Nice purchase lucky! I desperately want to get into medium format I am very jealous. I have a 35mm yashica rangefinder and its lens is my favorite of the ones I’ve used such far.

And I do believe that is a Yashica-D so whats my prize extra marks will be fine.

Dude, you do realise that once you go medium format you never go back!

Quick Q A: where’d you get your gels from? What would you recommend?

rhys, it’s clearly not a yashica-d (it’s a yashica mat) so you lose marks! i’ll remember that indiscretion when i go through your reports. good luck in your exams mate! :)

joel: i honestly can’t remember the website where i got my gels from, it’s an aussie place. maybe roscoe?

b&h have sample gel packs (identical to what i got from here) for $0.01! so next time you make an order from there, check out the gels as well.
